Textile products must state fibre composition using standardised names – online before purchase as well.
Legal framework
- Regulation (EU) 1007/2011: only standardised fibre names with percentages (Art. 5, 9); notice on non-textile parts of animal origin (Art. 12); information before purchase in distance selling (Art. 16)
- Sustainability claims: stricter rules since 27 September 2026
Case law
- BGH, 24 March 2016, I ZR 7/15 – no fibre information required in brochures without a direct ordering option
Case examples
A product page says “soft cotton feel” for a polyester shirt and gives no composition. Missing and misleading fibre information.
A brand labels a collection “sustainable” without specifics. Generic environmental claims are prohibited unless proven.
